Special Places Travel Logo. EMAIL: info@specialplacestravel.com or PHONE: 1-877-642-2743 (001.443.321.3614 outside US/Canada).In 2017 The 8-passenger MS Elisabeth will be cruising on a unique route near the border of Belgium and Northern France. The MS Elisabeth was originally commissioned as a private luxury barge by a Belgian industrialist, with no expense spared. Her owner-operators since 2005, Martine and Bernard Buisseret, have many years of experience in the hospitality industry and will provide a warm and friendly welcome aboard along with their two crew members. Bernard is your captain and Martine is your chef -- she not only provides outstanding cuisine but can also give informal cooking lessons on board. We first visited the MS Elisabeth and met the owners in 2014 when it was moored in Belgium and enjoyed a fabulous lunch on board which Martine prepared.

The barge has four guest cabins -- two larger suites with a queen bed and two smaller twin-bedded cabins, all with ensuite bathroom with shower. It is furnished throughout with beautiful designer fabrics and art work and has a covered deck with dining table and chairs as well as a wheelhouse with guest seating.

The MS Elisabeth will cruise on the Meuse River from the town of Namur in Belgium, with its citadel dating back to the Roman era, to the quaint village of Givet on the French border, on through the Belgian Ardennes forest, and ending at the charming city of Charleville-Mezieres, the capital of the French Ardennes.

After getting settled on board, we have a guided tour of the Citadel of Namur, a dominating stone fortress and the oldest permanent settlement in the Benelux dating back to the Roman era, which sits at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse Rivers. Return to the barge for a short cruise around Namur and diner on board.

We start our cruise this morning down the sparkling Meuse River to the little village of Dinant with its towering cliffs jutting up from the banks of the river. Our excursion today is to the Abbey of Maredsous, a lovely Benedictine monastery built in 1872. After touring the spectacular buildings, we'll enjoy a tasting of the beer and world famous cheese made at the Abbey. Return to the barge for an aperitif and diner on board.

We will visit Freyr Castle, the former summerhouse of the Duke de Beaufort-Spontin, which dates back to the middle ages. The castle welcomes you into its harmonious premises which were furnished by the 20 generations who have lived there. You will learn the history of the castle and its wonderful surroundings of terraced gardens, fountains and 300 year old orange trees. Givet castle, built in the 16c, is situated on a steep hill dominating the river and town below. Dinner on board.

At 1pm we return to the MS Elisabeth for lunch and cruise through a quarter mile tunnel to the town of Fumay. Dinner on board.

Wednesday - Fumay to Monthermé
Today we enjoy a peaceful cruise, with opportunities to walk or bike, through unspoiled nature in the heart of the Ardennes forest to the charming village of Monthermé. At 9am we will leave for Tournai and while cruising we will visit the marvelous castle of Beloeil. The domain of Beloeil has been the residence of the Princes de Ligne since the XIVth century. The park is 25 hectares (61.8 acres) and along with the castle is one of the most beautiful historical sites in Belgium. In each room, antique furniture and unique collections testify to its glorious past history, and provide a link between the present and the future. You will finish the visit to the castle with a tour in the garden in a little train. Return to the boat at Tournai on the river l'Escaut (Schelde River) for dinner.

Monday - Tourai to Coutrai
You'll spend the first hours of the day on the boat and enjoy the beauty of cruising on the river l'Escaut (nice by bike too). In the afternoon you will go to Lille in France and walk around the streets and the squares to discover the town's heritage, history and "l'art de vivre" through its main sites and monuments: the Palais Rihour, the Main Square, the old stock exchange, the Opera House, the Chamber of Commerce, and Notre-Dame de la Treille cathedral.
