The 24-passenger Mirabelle offers an ideal introduction to Bordeaux wines during a unique cruise to the five major Bordeaux wine districts. Every day the Mirabelle will take you to a different Bordeaux wine region. Jean-Luc Magnac, oenologist and wine consultant for your cruise, will provide all the information you need to understand Bordeaux wines: topography, geology, grape varieties, etc., as well as recommended pairings with food. The Chef and Jean-Luc are masters in the art of finding just the right balance between food and wine for creating unforgettable gastronomic experiences. On board the Mirabelle you will discover the gastronomic wonders of South West France, such as foie gras, duck confit, and oysters.

Your all inclusive cruise will take you along the Garonne River, Gironde Estuary and the Dordogne River to see the country and visit the vineyards that produce the great Bordeaux wines. The cruise includes tours in an private air-conditioned coach to prestigious chateaux. These excursions always end with a tasting, which is essential for understanding what Bordeaux wines are all about, learning their secrets, and delving into their history. The cruise will also enable you to discover the area's outstanding architectural heritage reflecting centuries of history. This includes ancient fortified castles, superb Romanesque churches, prehistoric caves, and unique Gallo-Roman sites. You will also have time to stroll around charming cities and villages, investigate open-air markets featuring wonderful local produce and enjoy shopping in a wide variety of boutiques.

The Mirabelle has 12 cabins, each about 130 sq ft with twin beds, except for one newly-configured double-bedded cabin, and all with an ensuite bathroom with shower. Each cabin has two windows and six of the cabins have an upper bunk bed for groups up to 30. There is a sundeck with canopy at the bow with tables and chairs for enjoying the scenery and dining on deck as well as a large new upper deck with lounge chairs. The salon is filled with banquettes with plenty of seating and there is an adjacent dining room with round tables for six, all with large panoramic windows.

We were on board in September 2015 and met the owner Pascale, the guide Jean Luc, the chef and the captain Denis, who were all charming and full of information about the Bordeaux region. We thought the cuisine was exceptional and Jean Luc gave a great explanation of the delicious Bordeaux wines paired with the cuisine.

SAMPLE ITINERARY*
Bordeaux: Garonne & Dordogne Rivers
Libourne to Castets-en-Dorthe 2017

Sunday - Welcome to Barge Mirabelle! Meet in Bordeaux, drive to beginning of the cruise in Libourne
Your party will be met at 4:00 pm at the Bordeaux St Jean train station. You'll then be chauffeured to Mirabelle, moored in the town of Libourne. Libourne was built in 1270 as a bastide town, meaning that it was designed around a central square surrounded by market arcades. There are many such towns along the route. Buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries may still be seen. Estimated travel time is one hour. Welcome aboard cocktails, hors d'ouevres and introduction of crew will take place before you are shown into your cabin. Your first dinner is a preview of the gourmet cuisine to be enjoyed all week aboard Mirabelle.

Monday - Libourne to Bourg-sur-Gironde - St. Emilion, village of history, devotion and wine
After waking up to your first breakfast buffet it is time to visit one of the highlights of the cruise: The medieval village of St. Emilion, known for its fine Bordeaux wine and as an open-air history museum. St. Emilion was founded in the 8th century by the hermit monk Emilion, whose simple quarters are shown on the walking tour. Wine production began in the 12th century; wine trade with the British gave the town wealth and status. Most incredible is the Monolithic Church, the largest underground church in Europe; it was carved deeply into the rock of the town's underlying limestone cliffs in the 11th and 12th centuries. Alongside this history of religious devotion and commerce is the modern St. Emilion: A warren of cobblestoned alleys, boutiques, small restaurants and wine shops. Back on board, enjoy lunch and an afternoon cruise on the Dordogne River to the tiny village of Bourg, a beautiful and tranquil stone village, a gem of 17th and 18th century architecture.

Tuesday - Bourg-sur-Gironde to Blaye via a stopover in Lamarque - Wine AND chocolate tasting!
Begin the day in Bourg, where you'll be offered either a tour of the town or a wine tasting. Return to Mirabelle in late morning as she slips onto the Garonne River for a lunchtime cruise to Pauillac, the staging area for today's sightseeing. The first visit is to Chateau Prieure - Lichine, purchased in 1951 by Alexis Lichine, who introduced the wines of France to Americans in many books and lectures. The rural charm of this property is enhanced by lovely gardens and Lichine's collection of decorative iron doors dating back to the 1700s. After a tour of the vines and an explanation of the production process, sample fine vintages in the modern tasting room. Then it's off to chocolate tasting at Mademoiselle de Margaux, offering original chocolates enhanced with tastes of fruits and other delicacies. Finish the tour with a drive through the vineyards of Medoc and past the grand chateaux of Lafite, Mouton-Rothschild and others. Return to the barge still moored at Lamarque and an early evening cruise to Blaye.

Wednesday - Blaye to Bordeaux via Ill de Margaux - Fascinating 17th century fort
Walk right from the mooring at Blaye up to the Citadel, a fortification built in 1689 by Marquis de Vauban, France's foremost military architect of that time and adviser to King Louis IV. The Citadel is located high over the town, with a view of the Gironde Estuary and the barge Mirabelle in port. A very interesting walking tour introduces the warren of connecting tunnels carved out of the rock by hand, as well as to the tiny homes and officer's training areas, giving a glimpse of life in the fort. Then it is a short drive to the elegant Chateau Marquis de Vauban for a tasting of wines produced on the property. After this active morning, return to Mirabelle for lunch and to cruise into the Gironde Estuary, formed from the meeting of the Rivers Dordogne and Garonne. Within this estuary is a series of small islands, one of which, Ile de Margaux is our next destination. On this petite island, occupied only by one family, is a lovely estate home, a small facility for wine production and of course the vines. Sample vintages and converse about life on the island. Then it's back on board to experience the most exciting navigation of the cruise - entering into the city of Bordeaux, for our overnight mooring. Mirabelle cruises past the restored waterfront and under bridges, to her mooring right in the center of this elegant city with its 18th century harbor buildings designed by Baron Haussmann, who later used the same plan to transform Paris. What a setting for dinner tonight, and of course, you might want to go ashore for a nightcap!

Thursday - Bordeaux to Cadillac - Walk into Bordeaux, capital of the wine route

After breakfast, your city guide will meet you for a walking tour of Bordeaux, which will introduce many historical buildings and churches, and with a possible visit to Gallerie Bordelaise to sample the city's best pastries, chocolates and cheeses. Sights of interest in Bordeaux include the Bourse, Saint Andre Cathedral, the Grand Theatre on Place de la Comedie, and streets devoted to shopping. Then it's back on board for a late lunch and navigation back on the Garonne River to Cadillac with its ancient chateau overlooking the town. Unique to the Cadillac area is Le Passevant wine, which is heavy and equivalent to port. Taste this wine at dinner on board tonight.

Friday - Cadillac to Castets-en-Dorthe - Chateau and Sauterne tastings!
This morning, our first visit is to the Chateau de Roquetaillade, which has been owned by the same family for 700 years. As well as having remains from many eras on its grounds, Roquetaillade was, in the 18th century, one of the few private commissions of architect Violet le Duc, best known for his restoration of Carcassonne. Violet le Duc re-imagined the exterior and completely re-decorated the interior in an exuberant swirl of painted walls, statuary, and elegant furniture. This decor even extended to the small chapel. Then it is on to sample sauternes at the lovely Chateau Guiraud, at which all-organic farming methods are used the the grapes still picked by hand. Back to Mirabelle, where there is another fascinating navigation on the Garonne River and through two large locks into the last mooring on the Canal du Midi. That evening there will be a delicious and nostalgic "final dinner".

Saturday - Castets-en-Dorthe to Bordeaux - A Sad Farewell
At 9:30 am, chauffeured transfer back to the Bordeaux St Jean Train Station, with an estimated driving time of one hour.
