Using the Tow Path
The ability to use the tow path for walking and bicycling is what makes the canal trip stand out from a river trip. In our surveys the guests rank the ability to walk or bike the tow path as being as important as are the shore excursions. It is possibile to walk the tow path each day on our Alsace cruise.
![]() We get on and off the boat while it transits the locks. There are 10 multi speed mountain bikes on board for guest use. |
![]() Most of the two paths are set up for bicycles with a paved path on one side or the other. The distance between locks is available on a chart onboard. |
![]() Lorraine takes about 20 minutes to transit a lock and moves at about 3-4 mph which is a brisk walking speed. |
![]() Guests can easily walk one or two locks ahead and wait for Lorraine to catch up. |
![]() The only places the tow path is not perfectly flat is where there is a bridge across the canal. It climbs briefly then descends on the other side of the bridge. |
![]() We have a selection of girls and boys bikes. |
