Cruise in the France on the Canal Lateral a la Garonne, in the Southwest region, aboard the First Class Hotel-Barge LA CHOUETTE

SEVEN DAYS / SIX NIGHTS

The 6-passenger La Chouette is a traditional Dutch motor barge built in 1934 for carrying cargoes along the inland waterways of Europe. She has now been lovingly and professionally converted into a luxury charter barge for only six guests in the space often devoted to twice that number. La Chouette has moved to a new cruise region for 2011 in the Southwest region of France, offering cruises on the Canal Lateral a la Garonne either in Gascony, between Montauban and Agen or farther west in the Aquitaine region between Agen and Bordeaux.

Discover France the quiet way. Come for a holiday cruise on La Chouette and we'll show you a unique way of experiencing France and the French.

La Chouette is a luxury charter barge immaculately fitted out for just six guests and run by her owners, Bob & Bobbie Marsland.

Our aim is to help you have a holiday to remember. Relax on board as we take you along the tranquil waters of a canal and river system steeped in history. Sleepy waterside villages will unfold their secrets to an enquiring explorer. Majestic chateaux will enthral the visitor. And the warmth of welcome you will receive from the friendly local people will captivate you.

If you feel the need to exercise we have mountain bikes on board. Go for a ride along the tow path, or further afield to discover an off-the-beaten track village or monument, or just take a gentle stroll. You can meet up with La Chouette further along the waterway. At the leisurely pace we cruise we are never far away.

Your hosts, Bob and Bobbie Marsland MEET YOUR HOST AND HOSTESS
Bob and Bobbie Marsland took their first trip on a canal and riverboat back in 1967 and it was the first of many such holidays. Indeed, over the next twenty-five years they cruised a large part of the British canal system, as well as taking several sailing trips on charter yachts in the Mediterranean.

Bob's work has been in television. He was a TV Director with the BBC before setting-up his own Independent Television Production Company. Bobbie also worked for the BBC and it was there that they met while on different training courses at the BBC training school in 1964. Bobbie left the BBC to bring up their children, and later forged a new career as a Government Officer in the Department of Social Security.

It was their mutual desire to change direction and create a business they could work in together that led them to buy a Dutch barge and have it converted into a luxury charter boat ideally suited to the French waterways.

Bobbie's passion for cooking and Bob's love of boating, combined with their fascination with France and all that is French, will ensure that you have a holiday to remember!

Passenger Comments:

What a delightful adventure! We wanted to taste French wines, eat good food, meet new people and relax! Mission accomplished!!
-- C.G., WY, USA

It was all I'd hoped for. I definitely know it was all Lucie hoped. Thanks for a wonderful week and for making a culture and cuisine less mysterious.
-- H.O., WY, USA

This is the first time in forty one years that Peter ever relaxed on a vacation! Simply the best time we've ever had. We've eaten and laughed our way through the entire trip - bravo!
-- P.C., NC, USA

Thank you so much for a wonderful week on your floating home. You are very gracious, knowledgeable and warm people and made us feel so welcome. The meals were memorable and selection of restaurants was perfect. It was so nice to have new friends and we will definitely see you again.
-- G.S., GA, USA

The high points of the cruise were leaving Paris under the bridges, playing dominoes in the rain on top of the boat at 3am, learning about champagnes and wines, just sitting on top with coffee in the morning as well as amazing service.
-- K.S., USA

Everything was fabulous. Bob and Bobbie were great! We had no idea the food was going to be such a gourmet experience -- it gave us a chance to do something we would never have done otherwise. That aspect might be emphasized to future clients -- the quality of the restaurant stops and the whole gourmet experience.
-- M.C., USA

Incredible experience! Bob, Bobbie and crew felt like family by midweek. They were high points for us as well as the food, wine and beautiful countryside. As for the meals and wines they were absolute perfection -- all 60 types of wines and champagnes! Meals on board and out were some of the best we have ever had.
-- W.M., RI, USA

We had a wonderful time and it was beyond our expectations. There are many such barge trips in France but The Marslands made the difference. Bob and Bobbie Marsland are the most gracious and warm hosts. They were knowledgeable and always willing to tell us the details. They were flexible as well, accommodating our requests for bike rides, menus and on-shore time. We also enjoyed spending time with Bob or Bobbie in the wheelhouse. They added a familial element to the trip yet at the same time you are treated like a very special guest. Service was excellent. The crew, Natalie and Olivia, were bubbly and polite. The food and wine were gastrononmic delights; admittedly a slight overdose on calories and fat for one week. So it was good to have the combination of spectacular restaurants and Bobbie's home cooked meals. There was never a moment of hunger! Bob's knowledge of champagne and wines added to the enjoyment. The excursions were well organized and the variety was sufficient.

"Southwest: Glorious Gascony"
Canal Laterale a la Garonne:
Montauban to Agen

La Chouette's first foray into the South West region of France will start with a relaxing cruise on the Canal de Garonne between Montauban, birthplace of painter Ingres and sculptor Bordelle and Agen, famous for its prunes.  When we say relaxing our past guests, our La Chouette friends as we prefer to call them, will know we relax at quite a pace, preferring to take our guests to lots of interesting places and to restaurants that will delight them.  But there will also be lots of time to relax on deck with a glass of something cool and just watch the world slowly glide by, or take a walk, or bike, on the towpath as the barge will progress at a slow pace in the sultry south.

Thursday
Bob and Bobbie will meet you at the pre-arranged pick-up place at 2.00pm and take you to La Chouette, moored in the town of Montauban, to enjoy a champagne welcome and introduction to our crew and your home for the next week.  Montauban, capital of the Département Tarn et Garonne, is on the river Tarn and at the head of a short branch canal and it is down this section of canal that we will cruise later this afternoon. Once moored in Montech we will take you by van back the few kilometres to dinner at the smart modern restaurant Au Fil de L'Eau, alongside the river Tarn in Montauban.  On the way there will be time to show you the sights of the town and, if interested in the works of Ingres, we will fit in a visit to the Ingres museum.

Friday
After breakfast of fresh croissants, delicious pastries and bread as only the French make, along with continuous coffee and fruit juices, we will head off in the van to visit a local winery. After tasting the fruits of their passion we will take lunch at the restaurant where we first tasted Saint-Sardos wine, La Maison de l'Ecluse, alongside the canal back in Montech. After lunch we cruise to Castelsarrasin, hopefully leaving Montech on the unique "pente d'eau", or water slope, which bypasses five locks.  We say hopefully because at the time of writing it is in need of repair.  If it is not working we will take the locks alongside. Dinner on board.

Saturday
Over breakfast we take an early morning cruise to the Romanesque town of Moissac, crossing the river Tarn by way of a marvelous piece of industrial architecture, the 356 metre long Cacor aqueduct. In the town there is a small branch canal with a lock that gives us access to the river where we moor and have lunch on board. In the afternoon we can take a guided tour of the Abbey de St. Pierre with its amazing cloisters and Romanesque tympanum.  Moissac is also famous for the chasselas grape which is grown in the surrounding villages. Dinner tonight is at the restaurant Le Manoir de St. Jean in the village of St. Jean-de-Cornac.

Sunday
Sunday is market day in Moissac so after breakfast we can wander among the stalls and wonder at the produce on sale.  Afterwards we will cruise for the rest of the morning during which you may like to walk along the towpath or ride one of the bikes we have on board. Lunch today is a short van ride away at the restaurant L'Horloge in the stunning hilltop village of Auvillar.  A short walk after lunch will be rewarded by the sight of some beautiful buildings and spectacular views. On the way back to La Chouette we can stop at Donzac and visit the Conservatoire des Metiers Autrefois, the museum of rural life and trades of bygone times. Dinner on board.

Monday
Our morning cruise takes us to Valence d'Agen where you can walk around and marvel at the several ancient lavoirs where the women of the village would wash the family's clothes before Mr. Westinghouse came along.  We cruise along a little further to Le Buisson where we moor and have lunch on board. Another local winery beckons for our afternoon visit, La Cave de Donzac
which specializes in "le vin noir du sud ouest" or black wine of the south west ... and it is good for your heart!  Dinner tonight is at the Chateau St. Philippe in the nearby village of St. Nicolas de la Balerme.

Tuesday
This morning we cruise to Agen, famous for Agen Prunes as well as another magnificent ancient aqueduct which takes us over the river Garonne.  That is for the afternoon, though, as we take time in the town to visit the Cathedral St. Caprais as well as doing some souvenir shopping. After lunch on board we cruise across the 580 metre long aqueduct and on to the village of Sérignac sur Garonne where we take dinner in the hotel/restaurant Le Prince Noir.

Wednesday
After breakfast we will take you to the agreed transfer location for your onward journey.

Note: This a suggested itinerary and is subject to change according to availability and guests' wishes.

Canal Lateral a la Garonne
Agen to Bordeaux

Thursday
Bob and Bobbie will meet you at the pre-arranged pick-up place at 2.00pm and escort you to La Chouette moored in Agen for a champagne reception and introduction to our crew and your home for the next week. Once settled in we will cruise across the magnificent stone aqueduct which takes the canal over the mighty river Garonne and on to the village of Sérignac sur Garonne. Our first dinner ashore is a short walk away at the Restaurant Le Prince Noir.

Friday
Breakfast is served as we cruise along the Canal Lateral a la Garonne to the market town of Buzet-sur-Baise where we arrive in time to savour the delights of the weekly market.  The canal crosses the river Baise here.  We will take the van along the path of this river to the medieval town of Nérac where we have lunch at "Aux Délices du Roy," the king's delight, which specialises in fish brought in fresh each day.  After lunch we can enjoy a digestif when we visit a local armagnac producer who will tell us all there is to know about making this smooth nectar of a drink. On the way back to La Chouette we can stop off for a walk around the walled town of Vianne, steeped in history. Dinner on board.

Saturday
Today we have the opportunity to go back to school.  Cooking school that is!  The chef of our lunchtime restaurant, "Le Goujon qui Fretille" , gives lessons and we have the opportunity to join him in his kitchen to prepare a typical French country meal which we then go on to eat.  After lunch we visit one of the top Appellation Buzet wine producers.  Henry de Batz is a direct descendant of the musketeer, D'Artagnan, and has a vineyard of ten acres, mainly planted with merlot, around the Chateau de Salles. Supper on board.

Sunday
This morning we take a short cruise to Bout de la Côte from where we take the van to the farmers market at Tonneins after which we visit the Garonne river museum which tells the story of how important the river was to the economy of the area. Lunch out today is at the Auberge de L'Escale in the tiny village of Pont-des-Sables and which is where we will later in the day moor La Chouette.  After lunch we drive a most scenic route back to the barge then cruise slowly along to Pont-sur-Sables. Supper on board.

Monday
Our morning cruise today takes us to Meilhan-sur-Garonne where we moor La Chouette and take the van for a drive into the vineyards of Sauternes where we stop for lunch at restaurant Le Saprien, sitting out on the terrace almost touching the vines.  Dessert may well be accompanied by a Sauternes or a Barsac - there is a good selection to choose from. This afternoon we visit Chateau Roumieu to discover the history of the sweet Barsac and Sauternes wines... and taste one or two...Supper on board.

Tuesday
This morning we cruise to the very end of the canal, where it pours out onto the mighty and capricious river Garonne.  We moor La Chouette in the tiny port here and have lunch on board. After lunch we visit the picturesque bastide town of Montségur, in the Dropt valley, with its shady arcades and half timbered houses. Next a short drive takes us to the 13th century Chateau de Lavison,  frequented by royalty of the 14th century who used it as a hunting lodge.  Nowadays it is a family run AOC Bordeaux vineyard under the care of maitresse de chai, Alexandra Martet, who shows us the winery and with whom we may taste her wines. We return to La Chouette to freshen-up prior to going to dinner in the village of St. Macaire at the renowned restaurant L'Abricotier.

Wednesday
After breakfast we will take you to the agreed point for your onward journey.
