Casual Cruises In France On The Canal du Midi On The First Class Hotel Barge CAROLINE

SEVEN DAYS / SIX NIGHTS

The 6-passenger Caroline was built in Holland in 1928 as a cargo ship transporting goods between the islands of the North Sea and the mainland. She was converted into a luxurious hotel barge in 1995 and recently remodeled in 2007 by the owners on board, Uli and Ute Weber. She has three beautifully appointed cabins, one with a double bed and ensuite bathroom and two others with twin beds and separate bathrooms with shower directly across the hall. There is also a spacious living room/dining salon with a wood burning stove and a carpeted sun-deck with lounge chairs and sheltering umbrellas.

On board Caroline, you will find a relaxed atmosphere. A comfortable lounge and dining area invites you to mingle with friends and family, and the well equipped galley is where Ute, the Chef, prepares every extraordinary meal. You will be able to relax on deck and watch the picturesque French landscape glide by at a serene pace (about 3-4 miles per hour). You can also use one of the bikes on board for an easy, stress free ride on the towpath beside the canal or cycle ahead and meet the barge in the next village.

The huge flowered sun deck is laid with a carpet and is also the best place to admire the gurgling waters in the famous oval locks. Enjoy relaxing on the sundeck with a cool drink or sit on the bench in the wheelhouse under a shady umbrella, and watch the beautiful French countryside pass by.

The three air-conditioned guest cabins aboard are spacious and each can be configured with either a double-bed or two twin sized beds. The double-bed cabin has a private bathroom with shower, wardrobes and shelves for your clothes and the two twin-bed cabins have their own bathroom directly across the hallway.

Caroline travels on the Canal du Midi between Beziers and Carcassonne. Along the cruise route, the daily excursions will take you to some medieval villages, allow you to stroll through local markets or enjoy culinary delights in a local Auberge. Visit one of the many vineyards and taste the superb wines of the Languedoc. The mild climate and the relaxing and friendly atmosphere will make your holidays unforgettable.

Passenger Comments:

The barge was very comfortable. Ute's food was fabulous, everything was delicious. Captain Uli was extremely skilled and organized and we never worried about our safety. We were the only passengers and so Uli and Ute responded to us in every way. Uli was so knowledgeable on all the excursions. We have never been taken care of in this way. We hope we will go again!
R & A M., CO, USA, October 2010

The trip with Caroline was great - largely due to the kind attentions of Uli and Ute for whom nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious and the barge spotlessly clean. Uli was very knowledgeable about the local wines and Ute was an amazing cook. We managed to go to some less well known places as well as the well-known ones. The region came up to all expectations.
R.G., England, September 2010

Uli & Ute looked after us in grand style. The bikes they provided & the maps for the routes were great. The food was wonderful, the scenery superb & the Caroline the most exclaimed-about barge on the Canal. Many thanks for a memorable trip.
N.C., Canada, September 2008

SAMPLE HALF BOARD ITINERARY*
Canal du Midi
Beziers to Carcassonne 2013

Typically Caroline will plan a half-day cruise each day. Depending on the stretch of the canal we are in and how many locks we have to pass, the cruise might be in the morning or the afternoon. We enjoy finding out together with our guests what their excursion preferences are. Each day the Canal du Midi offers walking and biking along the flat and well maintained towpath. You might find that you are walking faster than Caroline can follow you...

Sunday
Guests are picked up at approximately 4pm by Uli, your Captain, at the pre-arranged meeting point and transferred by private air-conditioned minivan to the Caroline mooring. Champagne welcome aboard by Ute, your Chef, and time to settle in while Caroline starts her first little cruise to your evening mooring. Relax on deck and watch the picturesque French landscape glide past. Our mooring tonight overlooks a wide area with vineyards and what hopes to be many marvelous sunsets from our deck during your week. Four course welcome dinner on board.

Monday - Poilhes to La Croisade
Awaken to enjoy an extensive continental breakfast with freshly brewed coffee, tea, fruit juices, croissants and baguettes, jams, ham, cereals.

Before we start our daily cruise you might decide to have a morning visit to the pre-Roman site of Oppidum d'Enserunes, which is a historical site from around 800 BC and has been part of the Via Domitia. This area also overlooks the famous Etang de Montady. We set off cruising, meandering through truly unbelievable and stunning scenery. While we pass by the petite village of Capestang, with its extremely small and narrow ancient bridge, the Caroline almost appears not to fit! Ute will serve our 3-course lunch on deck al fresco. This afternoon while relaxing on deck with a chilled drink enjoy yourself and watch the countryside pass by as we cruise to our mooring destination for the evening. Tonight the mooring is only a few steps away from a wonderful Auberge, a restaurant where you are welcome to have your dinner.

As with all our days, if guests prefer a stopover during the day please just let us know. If you prefer a walk or a bicycle ride along the towpath, this is easy to arrange. Perhaps a stroll into a little village? Caroline can 'park' at nearly each and every point along the Canal.

Sample excursions: Pre-Roman site of Oppidum d'Enserunes, Vineyard Perdiguier

Tuesday - La Croisade to Ventenac
After breakfast, we will start our cruise towards the village of Le Somail were we will stop for lunch. Our evening mooring is the charming and petite Ventenac. Here we will moor in front of the local vineyard whose stonework is built much like an old Chateau. It invites you in for a wine tasting. Dinner tonight may be taken in one of the two typical open air restaurants just steps from the Caroline.

Sample excursions: Wine tasting in Paraza or a trip by car to Minerve.

Wednesday - Ventenac to Homps
Today's cruise will take us to our first locks. The first has a single chamber while the next lock has a double chamber. A total of 4 locks with 6 chambers will bring us to our evening stop at Homps. We moor on a quay in the middle of this little village where guests have a wide choice of restaurants for dinner and a stroll tonight.

Thursday - Homps to Pucheric
This morning our day begins with a visit by minivan to the open air markets of Narbonne, the Palace of the Archbishop, and the Cathedral St Just, with its impressive organ. From this vantage the ancient Via Domitia can be seen. While enjoying the markets you can look for souvenirs or maybe purchase a fresh fish or meat for a BBQ tonight instead of dining out?

After lunch we leave Homps, cruising again through locks, this time transporting us 'uphill' to the next level of the Canal. Watch out for the special lock 'Aguille' which is decorated with many funny sculptures, made by the lock-keepers. Our evening mooring tonight is away from the villages and in the countryside.

Sample excursions: Exploring ancient Narbonne and the markets by car.

Friday - Pucheric to Trebes
Our cruise continues today towards Trebes, our final port. We pass by barge through "the green cathedral", so called as all the waterway is covered by more than three hundred years old trees. After we have been lifted up again in a three chamber lock towards the new upper level, we find ourselves in the middle of the little village of Trebes. Our mooring here is underneath the huge plane trees. Why not take your dinner tonight on the terrace of the restaurant which is located directly at the lock?

Sample excursions: Tour of the famous walled city of Carcassonne, a fascinating fortified medieval fortress, situated on top of Carcassonne overlooking the city.

Saturday - Trebes
After a relaxing breakfast, we will say goodbye and take our guests to their next destination, arriving at approximately 10 a.m. Drop-off may be coordinated at your hotel, the rail station, or depending on our cruise direction, the Carcassonne Airport.

Note: This is a sample itinerary and stops and excursions may be altered to suit guests individual ideas. On alternate weeks this cruise will run in the opposite direction.

SAMPLE ITINERARY*
Canal du Midi
Beziers to Carcassonne Cycling Itinerary 2013

Sunday
Guests are picked up at approximately 4pm by Uli, your Captain, at the pre-arranged meeting point and transferred by private air-conditioned Multivan to the Caroline mooring. Champagne welcome aboard by Ute, your Chef, and time to settle in while Caroline is starting her first little cruise to your evening mooring. Relax on deck and watch the picturesque French landscape glide past. Our mooring tonight overlooks a wide area with vineyards and what hopes to be many a marvelous sunset from our deck during your week. Four course welcome dinner on board. Today's welcome dinner is, as with dinners every night on Caroline, served with matching wines for the individual dishes.

You will get all of the information needed for the upcoming week. Typically you can bike everyday between 20 and 55 kms. These distances are from and to the Caroline. You start in the morning, having lunch at noon in a little bar or cafe, which you will find nearly everywhere along your trail. Ute has prepared some water or your preferred drinks and little snacks, so you have them always handy during your bike ride. When you are back on board in the afternoon, then Caroline starts her afternoon cruise.  During your stay, we provide you with a cell phone. You can call Uli at any time for whatever reason and he will be there. Or he can pick you up by car and get you back to Caroline halfway through your ride or whenever you call.  They will give you information regarding your trail as written, detailed information as well as a GPS tool, which might help you in finding your way.

Monday
Awaken to enjoy an extensive continental breakfast with freshly brewed coffee, tea, fruit juices, croissants and baguettes, jams, ham, and cereal. Your bike ride starts along the canal on the towpath heading towards the flight of seven locks and the huge aqueduct of Beziers. You will see the tunnel, Pierre-Paul Riquet built for the canal du Midi. The Pre-Roman site of Oppidum d'Enserune, which was essential to the ancient Via Domitia, the Roman road, connecting Rome with Spain, and the unique Lake of Montady.  Enjoy lunch at your expense at various places during your day. The path is level along the canal most of the time. Alternatively, why not pedal to a Mediterranean beach, only 25 km away? At approx imately 15:00 you will meet Caroline at a agreed mooring from where we will start the afternoon cruise. After your dinner, which will be held on Caroline every evening, you can enjoy the evening sitting on deck with a glass of wine or digestif, relaxing, talking about your adventurous day, and laughing.

Tuesday

Your adventure today will be a 25 km ride into the Mountains of the Minervoise, visiting the little ancient hilltop village of Minerve, which is situated at a level of approx 180 meters. There are still about 100 people living there. This visit is a must. Minerve's history is old and sometimes not pleasant.  The official roads leading up to Minerve are asphalt and traffic density is not high. You will have a safe trip up into the hills. Having seen the little Museum of Hurepel, which will  tell you everything about the cruelties which happened in this area 800 years ago, you can have a bite in one of the little bars/cafes up here. Back to Caroline in the afternoon, again we start an afternoon cruise, stopping at the little hamlet of Le Somail, where your dinner on board Caroline starts after maybe walking and exploring this small village.

Wednesday
From Le Somail, we recommend a visit to the Abbey of Fontfroide, near Narbonne. Today's trail is plain and totals 40 km. You will ride through the countryside with vineyards. You can take your lunch at the Fontfroide Cafe or snack on Ute’s packed lunch which you carry in one of backpacks provided. Tonight's mooring, after the afternoon cruise, will be at a Chateau, which resides on the banks of the canal. Why not a quick wine tasting before your dinner on Caroline starts?

Thursday

Today Uli recommends "a day off".  He would like to show you the village of Narbonne.  We visit (by Caroline’s minivan) the open air markets of Narbonne, the Palace of the Archbishop, the ancient underground cave storage and the Cathedral St Just, with its impressive organ. From this vantage point you can see the ancient Via Domitia. Narbonne was founded in 118 BC by the Romans along the Via Domitia. While enjoying the markets you can look for souvenirs before Uli invites you for lunch at a typical bar in the covered food market in the center of Narbonne. The cruise this afternoon includes our first lock. The night mooring will be in a small vineyard village where Ute has prepared your dinner. You prefer to bike instead? No problem at all. Another recommended bike ride leads into the steeper hilled area of Lagrasse, south of the Canal du Midi, into the foot hills of the Pyrenees. Lagrasse is situated at 108 meters with 600 inhabitants. The village is full of history and pretty houses. This trail is a total of about 55 km.

Friday
Today's adventure is the wine tour. After breakfast, you bike into a village west of Caroline's mooring. This is an easy trail which ends at a vineyard. Here you will be welcomed by the winemaker himself. He will tell you everything you wish to know and explain winemaking in depth. You have a "degustation"  (tasting) of his wines followed by a "Winemakers Lunch," with their wines of course.  After this experience, which can take about 3 hours in total, Uli will pick you up and guide you safely back to Caroline by car. The cruise this afternoon ends, after having gone through some bigger locks, in the village of Homps. Here you enjoy the farewell dinner tonight.

Saturday
After a relaxing breakfast, we will say goodbye and take our guests to their next destination, leaving at approximately 10 a.m. Drop-off may be coordinated at your hotel, the rail station, or depending on our cruise direction, the Carcassonne Airport.

Note: This is a sample itinerary and stops and excursions may be altered to suit guest's individual ideas and skills. We have alternative excursions prepared for you which we will talk about on your welcome evening. It may run in reverse depending on the cruise direction.
