Cruise In Southern Burgundy On The Canal de Bourgogne Aboard The First-Class Hotel-Barge BONHEUR
SEVEN DAYS/SIX NIGHTS
The Bonheur is a Luxemotor barge built in Holland in 1926 to serve as a working barge. Luxemotors have elegant hull shapes designed not only for the canals and rivers but also the inland seas of northern Europe. She has had a varied career from cargo vessel to passenger/restaurant boat in Paris and is now a home and charter barge.
The Bonheur was converted to a luxury hotel barge in 2006 by the owner-operators of your cruise, Paul and Annie Roberts, to provide upscale accomodations for barge holidays. During the renovations, a traditional layout was incorporated that places the wheelhouse and owner's cabin at the stern. The handsome iroko wheelhouse can be dismantled for lower bridges on the canals. Her graceful lines have been complemented with gentle steps up to the large deck area and hardwood timber capping the handrails. At 34 metres (110 feet), the Bonheur is one of the larger barges you can charter, and with only a 4 passenger capacity the public and private areas are very roomy. With a large lounge, two good sized cabins and a huge deck space used for both alfresco dining and relaxing on the sunloungers, there is always plenty of space for everyone.
Internally, the boat is light and airy due to the large picture windows that look into the large space where you can relax and unwind. The owners have tried to make her feel inviting by using warm French oak floors and ceilings together with traditional furnishings. The two guest cabins are very comfortable and can be configured with either a queen size or standard twin beds. Ensuite bathrooms are provided for each cabin and are spaced apart to provide maximum privacy. The Bonheur is operated by its charming owners and offers private charters for up to four passengers with breakfast, lunch and three dinners included. The three remaining evening meals are taken ashore at the guests' own expense and is not included in the cruise cost. Should guests wish to dine aboard on these evenings, a nominal charge will be charged for each meal. The advantage of chartering a whole barge for yourself, friends or family is that you do not have to adhere to a detailed itinerary. Each week can be adjusted to suit the interests of those chartering the barge but also to take advantage of what may be happening at any of the many places we stop and visit along the way. This may include attending a 'market day' with the Chef, enjoying a festival or one of the many events that the French love to hold.
The Bonheur cruises in the beautiful Burgundy region of France on the scenic Canal de Bourgogne, taking you through some of the famous wine growing areas. During the week, you will have the opportunity to explore the local towns and villages close to our route either on foot or using one of the bicycles we provide on board. Some of the other excursions will include a visit to one of the many chateaux in the area, a day out to the historic town of Beaune the wine capital of Burgundy, attend a private wine tasting at one of the villages we pass on the route, all of this while experiencing delicious local cuisine.
Imagine a barge holiday where your days unfold discovering the peace, beauty and culture of this delightful country. Enjoy the picturesque waterways and ever changing scenery as you float down the canal at a relaxing pace that allows you to appreciate the true essence of Southern Burgundy.

Passenger Comments:
It was a unique and memorable holiday which we and our friends enjoyed very much. Our expectations for the barge trip were high to begin with, and Anne and Paul consistently exceeded our expectations.
Bonheur was the prettiest barge on the canal, and our cabin was comfortable and well-appointed.

Lovely ... relaxing ... excellent day trips ... excellent food and wine ... fabulous hosts! SPT gets a 10 out of 10, every question was thoughtfully responded to in a timely manner.
S.G & M.S., CA, USA, May 2011
I have been in the hospitality industry for 40 years so I consider myself as knowledgeable and certainly as critical as the average traveler and I couldn't find fault with any of the experience. Cabins are very comfortable and beautifully appointed. Bed was fabulous. Amenities that Annie placed in the room were wonderful. The reading lights were bright enough to read in bed and the storage area was amazing for the size of the cabin. Air Conditioning was an added bonus that we loved. We have never felt more pampered. Truly our every need was anticipated and delivered. I think the level of personal service that you give your clients is extraordinarily represented in that same measure of personal service by Paul and Annie and the Bonheur. This is an excellent addition to what I am sure is a delightful group of barges.
B & L P., CA, USA, May 2011
Bonheur is a beautiful barge with excellent hosts and great itinerary. Meals and wines were some of the best we've had anywhere. The wine pairings were very well thought out and always delicious. Excursions were very interesting and gave a really good look at the Burgundy region, both historically and present day. We especially loved the local markets. Cabins are somewhat small but very well thought out and very comfortable. Besides who spends a lot of time in the cabin when you're cruising through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.
P & C W., CA, USA, May 2011
Far exceeded our expectations in all respects. Accommodations, food and hospitality were superb. Paul and Annie exude a warmth and ease which so enhances the experience that one soon feels they are long time friends with whom you are vacationing. Their goal of total relaxation for their guests seems to be paramount and is successfully achieved. No reservation in recommending the Bonheur experience for others and would happily repeat for ourselves.

SAMPLE ITINERARY*
Burgundy: Canal de Bourgogne
Dijon to Pont d'Ouche 2013
Sunday
Guests will be met at the Dijon TGV railway station in the afternoon and taken by car to Bonheur, which is moored on the Canal de Bourgogne in the Port of Plombieres-les-Dijon, just 15 minutes drive from Dijon. Welcome drinks and dinner in the evening gives us the opportunity to chat about the coming weeks' itinerary, while you gently unwind from your journey.
Monday
This morning we leave Dijon behind us as we cruise out into the countryside towards the picturesque valley of the Ouche. This is a day of cruising where you can relax on board, watching the world go by, but should you wish there are lots of opportunities to disembark at one of the many locks to either walk or cycle. We moor at the quiet village of Pont de Pany for this evening. Dinner ashore at a local restaurant.
Tuesday
This morning we take a drive into the historic town of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy. After a pleasant stroll around the medieval quarter, including the Ducal Palace and the famous Dijon mustard shop, you will have the opportunity to experience Dijon market day with the atmosphere of a French market at its best. We return to Bonheur for lunch and then this afternoon we take a leisurely cruise to the village Gissey sur Ouche. This evening you eat ashore at a local restaurant.
Wednesday
We have put today aside to explore a little further afield from the canal by car. In the morning we drive to the delightful town of Beaune, the historic wine capital of Burgundy. You will enjoy a visit to the famous Hotel Dieu, Hospice de Beaune. For lunch we have arranged for you to experience the hospitality of Olivier LeFlaive in the beautiful village of Puligny Montrachet where you will have the opportunity to sample 12 different wines with your meal. After lunch there will be free time available should you wish for shopping or strolling in Beaune before we return to Bonheur for the evening. Dinner is on board.
Thursday
This morning we gently cruise to the village of La Bussiere. After lunch aboard we take a drive to the hilltop village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois. This medieval village has a magnificent chateau fortress which was used by one of the Dukes of Burgundy with its high vantage point giving stunning views over the surrounding countryside and the canal far below. This evening we have made a reservation for our guests to eat at the Michelin starred restaurant of the Abbaye de la Bussiere, one of the highlights of the week. This beautiful estate has been transformed from a Cistercian abbey into a wonderful hotel where you will dine in style.
Friday
This morning we gently cruise to Pont d'Ouche. On this part of the canal we pass through small villages and stunning countryside. This afternoon, after lunch, we take a drive to the medieval chateau of Clos de Vougeot which is surrounded by vineyards. It is the headquarters of the Chevalier de Tastevin whose special label is awarded annually to the finest Cote d'Or vintages. We will drive through the famous wine village of Nuits St George as we return to Bonheur and guests will have the opportunity for a wine tasting. This evening guests eat aboard.
